Hundreds of families welcomed to annual Open Evening

On Wednesday 19th September, Cornwallis Academy hosted its annual Open Evening for prospective students and their families to experience that special ingredient that makes Cornwallis such an amazing school.

A record number of families enjoyed the welcoming and friendly atmosphere which is one of Cornwallis’ most striking features.  Prospective students and parents were given a flavour of how the school operates on a daily basis.  They enjoyed touring the school with the help of a guide who took great pride in showcasing their school.  Visitors were particularly impressed by our new library and the conversion of our plazas into traditional classrooms.

They also enjoyed listening to presentations from students in Years 7 and 13, from parents and from the headteacher.  India, a Year 7 student, said: “Since starting here in September, I have settled in very well.  I enjoy coming to school and being part of a community.  We have our own area of the school to meet our friends.  This helps me as I have a base to keep my belongings and I can meet with my friends in the morning.  Overall, Cornwallis is a great school and you should send your child here.”

Members of the Parent Council spoke of their experiences of Cornwallis, highlighting excellent communication and transition processes as some of the many reasons they chose to send their children to Cornwallis.

Finally, Mrs Linney-Drouet, Headteacher, concluded with outlining what parents and students can expect from Cornwallis.  She said: “ First of all, expect your child to be successful.  A few weeks ago, we were celebrating very impressive GCSE and A Level results.  Nearly 30% of our students achieved grade 5 or more in English and Maths.  Over half of our students achieved grade 4 or more.  Our Progress 8 score shows that the vast majority of our students achieve their expected grades and half of all subjects performed in line or above national average.  As a testament to our successes, a great number of students choose to stay with us for Sixth Form.  Our A Level and Btec results were very good indeed with 60% achieving A*-C at A Level or equivalent.  Furthermore, an increasing number of our students either go onto university or onto apprenticeships.  We work closely with all students to ensure they are choosing the right path for them.

Expect your child to be motivated.  Our data shows that an increasing number of students are achieving an average of 2 grades above their targets.  In Science, Maths and English, your child will be set throughout their time at Cornwallis, enabling students to showcase their strengths and fast track their learning or receive additional support if needed.  Attendance is also very good showing that students value their education and understand its importance.

Expect your child to be inspired. Our motto, ambitions for all, says it all.  An increasing number of our students are aiming high with more students than ever going to top universities and an increased number of Year 11 staying in our 6th Form.

Expect your child to be learning.  Expectations are very high which is why our students behave very well indeed.  We have a very straight forward and robust “no buts no ifs” approach to how we deal with unacceptable behaviour and will never shy away from imposing sanctions.

Expect your child to be excited and engaged.  Cornwallis is much more than just what happens in the classroom.  We take students skiing, bowling, to the theatre, to museums, we travel to France, Italy, Malawi to mention a few.  We offer the Duke of Edinburgh Award.  We keep our students fit and healthy with numerous sports teams.  We are particularly proud of our partnership with Maidstone United Football Club.
