Kent Teacher of the Year Awards
Congratulations to Mr. Jahanshahi for Winning Maidstone Maths Teacher of the Year and our Science Department for winning Maidstone Team of the Year & Kent Science Department of the Year
Maths Teacher of the Year: Payam Jahanshahi, Cornwallis Academy
Payam has an excellent rapport with students who respond to his constant encouragement to do better and praise for work well done. As one nominator said: “He is supportive, approachable, and makes learning easy. I don’t think I would pass my A-Level without him.”
Payam helps students to fully understand each topic by providing example exam questions, useful websites, and regular testing.
With the introduction of a new A-Level Maths specification, he had to learn and adapt some new topics. Within a strict timescale, he organised lessons to fit in all the topics while still having time for additional revision and exam questions. And he regularly runs after-school sessions for additional support.
Science Team of the Year: Science Department, Cornwallis Academy
The science department has overcome major challenges over the past two years. Despite one member of the team leaving without a replacement, and another on long-term sickness absence, the department covered all of the lessons. In some instances, class sizes increased to over 50 students! Yet this had no impact on progress data.
The department has developed four outstanding PGCEs and NQTs, and taken on four more. They have also redesigned all schemes of work, which are on a Virtual Learning Environment with each lesson planned and resources provided.
Results have shot up from 9% of grades A*- C in Combined Science to over 50% in grade 4 and above. And this leaps to 100% in Triple Science!
