KCC has recently launched two new Travel Schemes replacing the current Young Persons Travel Pass and Kent 16+ Travel Card.  We have been asked to make our parents/carers aware of the changes, which are detailed below, as provided by KCC.

The KCC Travel Saver is available to children in secondary school education and offers the same benefits as the current Young Persons scheme enabling parents the opportunity to halve the costs of bus travel rather than buying a ticket direct from operators.

The schemes represent a subsidy from KCC to parents of around £10m each year and means that KCC continues to support parents with the costs of bus travel more than any other Council in the UK outside of London.   A feature of the new scheme is the ability for parents to pay for the pass through a series of instalments, spreading the cost across 8 months.

When can the pass be used?

The pass offers unlimited bus travel between 6am and 7pm, Monday to Friday. It is valid from the start of the school year in 2019 to 31 July 2020 but some operators also allow it to be used at other times.

What does it cost?

  • £350 for a full year **
  • £100 for a full year for children who get free school meals.
  • Free for young carers, young people in care and care leavers.
  • If you are applying for more than two full cost passes, you can get the third and fourth pass free. **

** please note a £10 administration fee applies to these applications is paying by instalment **

Applications can be made from 3 June and students who hold current passes and may want to renew will be contacted to remind them of the need to reapply. They can do so using current passes to renew.

Please find attached copies of a leaflet and a flyer for the scheme.  Applications should be made as soon as possible and no later than 14 July.

Free passes

You can get a free pass if you are:

  • a young carer
  • in care or are a care leaver
  • applying for more than two full cost passes, you can get the third or fourth for free.

To help households with more than two children, we are offering parents the third or fourth pass for free. To take advantage of this offer, you will need to apply by post (PDF, 695.1 KB) (you cannot apply or renew online). Tick the box on each form that indicates you have more than two children and return all of the forms together. You can then deduct the cost of the third or fourth pass from your cheque or postal order (e.g. 2, 3 or 4 full year passes would cost £560). We will then check your details and send you the pass as normal. This offer is not available if any of the passes applied for are at the reduced fee (if you get free school meals) or if you already get one free.
