Subject Overview

At Cornwallis Academy the Business and Enterprise Department provides access to both subjects and an insight into how they operate within the business world.  We are an energetic and ambitious team, who seek to provide lessons that enthuse our students about Business and Travel and help to develop the skills they need to support future aspirations.

Key Stage 4 - BTEC First Award in Business 

Key Stage 4 Overview:

BTEC First in Business can help you take your first steps towards a career in the business world.  You’ll learn essential skills such as business enterprise, project management, selling and promoting a brand, and financial awareness.

Year 10:

Over the course of 2 years all students will cover 2 core units of work:

  • Unit 1 Enterprise and the Business World
  • Unit 2 Finance for Business

As well as further units to the value of 120 GLH which may include:

  • Unit 3 Promoting a Brand
  • Unit 4 Principles of Customer Service
  • Unit 5 Sales and Personal Selling
  • Unit 6 Introducing Retail Business

Assessment at Key Stage 4:

All BTEC Level 2 courses consist of 4 Units of work, broken down as 75% coursework (3 Units) and 25% examination (1 Unit).  Coursework units are internally assessed and moderated before being externally moderated by the exam board.

Key Stage 4: Applied GCSE in Business 

Key Stage 4 Overview:

This qualification is designed to actively engage students in the study of business and develop them as effective independent learners.  Allowing students to develop and apply their business knowledge, understanding and skills to contemporary issues in a range of local, national and global contexts. 

Year 11:

Students will consider the different stakeholders and how businesses can be ethical and sustainable along with basic financial documentation and

  • Investigating How Business Work
  • Financial Records (examination)

Assessment at Key Stage 4:

The Applied GCSE Business course consists of 1 Controlled Assessment and 1 External Examination.  The coursework unit is internally assessed and moderated before being externally moderated by the exam board. 

Key Stage 5 

BTEC National Extended Certificate in Business

Edexcel

Overview of the course:

This course is a 2-year programme designed to give students an overview of the Business World, looking at a variety of different industries.  They will be able to look in detail at how and why businesses operate, the skills required to do so as well as customer service and marketing whilst developing their own skills and knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

What Will You Study:

There are 3 Mandatory units and 1 optional.  Students will be required to produce a portfolio of coursework with will be externally moderated.  The Units of study may include:

  • Unit 1 Exploring Business
  • Unit 2 Developing a Marketing Campaign
  • Unit 3 Personal and Business Finance
  • Unit 4 Managing an Event
  • Unit 5 International Business
  • Unit 6 Principles of Management

Assessment:

This course is a combination of examination, externally set and assessed units and internally set and assessed units.

Possible Career Paths:  

Students who follow this path may continue on to higher education courses, not necessarily in business related subjects, work apprenticeships or directly into the work place.


A Level Business

Overview of the course:

  • Theme 2:  Managing Business Activities
  • Theme 3:  Business decisions and Strategy
  • Theme 4:  Global Business

Assessment:

The A’ level course has 3 externally assessed examinations in the 2nd year, consisting of Papers 1 and 2 covering all 4 themes (each paper equalling 35% of the overall qualification) and Paper 3 assessing all 4 themes through pre-release material and unseen material (30% of the overall qualification).

Possible Career Paths:  

Students who follow this path may continue on to higher education courses, not necessarily in business related subjects, work apprenticeships or directly into the work place.
